DESIGNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The example of Tromsø Competition in Norway

The design approach to the project which won the First Prize and the 1990 Award of Excellence of the International Winter Cities (USA, Canada, Japan and the Scandinavian countries), was to crystallize prototypes of innovative, flexible and sustainable solutions which could be used all over the Nordic regions.

The focus was on one particular public square, the Strandtorg, in Tromsø, Norway. The concept was based on Arctic climate research data, the utilization of glass and aluminum as innovative, futuristic materials, a comprehensive programmatic analysis, site analysis and preservation of the old buildings surrounding the site.
